Bank Indonesia (BI) has prepared Rp1.27 trillion worth of cash for distribution to meet the needs of the people in the West Papua Province during the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year celebrations.
The Head of the West Papua BI Representative Office in Manokwari, West Papua, Saturday, December 20, said that the cash requirement at the end of this year is estimated at IDR 1.16 trillion or an increase of 13 percent (year on year/yoy).
"If the Christmas period 2024 and New Year 2025, the realization is as much as Rp. 1.03 trillion. We provide more than what has been projected," he said, quoted by Antara.
According to him, the increase in the need for cash, especially ahead of national religious holidays (HKBN), is in line with the increase in household consumption in the West Papua region.
The distribution of cash is aimed at ensuring that local communities have access to cash that is easily, safely, and conveniently distributed through the conventional banking network.
"The increase in the need for cash is also in line with the increasing mobility of the community, religious activities, and tourism at the end of the year," said Setian.
In addition, he said, the amount of cash not worth distributing (UTLE) that had been absorbed by the central bank in the West Papua region from January to December 2025 was recorded at Rp. 1.25 billion.
This number is relatively low and reflects the increasing level of public awareness in maintaining the physical condition of money through the application of the behavior of love, pride, and understanding of rupiah.
"The quality of the rupiah circulating in West Papua is relatively maintained," said Setian.
According to him, the circulation of counterfeit money in the West Papua region during the 2025 period is still under control, because BI only received and clarified a total of 10 counterfeit money findings.
However, Bank Indonesia continues to urge the public to increase vigilance against the potential for the circulation of counterfeit money, especially in the midst of transaction activities towards the end of the year.
"Every year at the end of the year, transaction activity increases drastically. Therefore, it is necessary to be meticulous in every transaction to prevent losses," said Setian.
