The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs emphasized that the negotiation process for Indonesia and the United States (US) trade rates is still ongoing.

Spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Haryo Limanseto said that there were no special issues in the discussion, and the dynamics that emerged during the negotiation process were normal.

"The trade negotiations between Indonesia and the United States are still in progress, there are no specific problems in the negotiations, the dynamics in the negotiation process is normal," he said in a written statement, Wednesday, December 10.

He added that the Indonesian government hopes that the trade agreement can be completed soon and provide benefits for the two countries.

Previously, the negotiation process was reportedly threatened with failure after the US side claimed that Indonesia had withdrawn a number of commitments that had been agreed in July.

Reuters reported that a US official who declined to be named stated that Indonesia no longer adhered to the agreement ever reached.

"They reneged on what we agreed on in July," the official said without providing details on which specific commitments were a problem.

In July 2025, Indonesia and the US reached an initial agreement that was considered profitable for both parties, namely Indonesia expressed its willingness to remove tariffs on more than 99 percent of products from the US and eliminate non-tariff barriers faced by American companies. In return, the US will lower the tariff for Indonesian products to 19 percent from the previous 32 percent.

The deal was first announced by US President Donald Trump on July 15, 2025, calling it a major win for various American industrial sectors, from automotive to agriculture.

After the announcement, the two countries continued negotiations to finalize the details of the agreement before the implementation was carried out.

However, it has recently been reported that the Indonesian delegation informed the Ambassador of the US Trade Representative Jamieson though that they could not approve some of the commitments deemed binding and Indonesia was said to want to review a number of parts of the trade agreement.

US officials fear the move will result in an unfavorable deal for America compared to the country's latest deal with two other Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia and Cambodia.

In addition, Indonesia is also reported to have experienced setbacks in fulfilling its commitment to eliminating non-tariff barriers to US industrial and agricultural exports, as well as commitments to digital trade issues.
