JAKARTA - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) revealed that it has backed up 800 million tons of coal for downstream projects. The downstream projects carried out include coal gasification into Dimethyl Ether (DME) as a substitute for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

"PTBA has backed up 800 million tons for downstreaming. So there is no reserve issue, I think it is ready to move," said Director of Downstreaming and Diversification of PT Bukit Asam Products Turino Yulianto, quoted Tuesday, October 21.

He said that coal is no longer a problem but can be the energy future in Indonesia through downstreaming. He explained that previously China had succeeded in downstreaming by setting up 96 factories to convert coal into gas.

"Technologically, it's already protected. This is no longer science rocket technology. The field is already running and the added value can be 5.6, up to 10 times." he explained.

He emphasized that PTBA was serious in carrying out downstream activities starting from turning coal into DME. He emphasized that currently PTBA has also agreed with Pertamina Patra Niaga regarding the gasification project.

"Hopefully, if there are no obstacles, I think in front of the meeting we can start, technologically there are no issues, in reserve there is no issue," he explained.

Not only DME, this 800 million tons reserve will also be allocated for projects such as anode sheet, artificial graphite, to potassium humat.

"Not only DMEs, all kinds of things. DMEs only need 5-6 million tons per year, meaning approximately 120 million tons of coal (for 20 years)," said Turino.
