JAKARTA - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) affirms the company's readiness to support the development of the carbon transportation business, especially to support the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS).

PIS' VP Business Development, Muthia Rizky Neldi said, as part of PT Pertamina (Persero), PIS highlighted the importance of cross-border CO2 transportation as part of the global supply chain for decarbonization.

PIS sees a great opportunity to act as a strategic liaison between the issuer, terminal operator, and carbon storage provider. Our fleet and infrastructure capabilities allow PIS to become a key player in the transportation of liquidated CO2 (LCO2)," he said, Wednesday, September 24.

As a leading energy shipping company, continued Mthia, PIS currently operates more than 106 ships belonging to various types, including carrier gas, crude carriers, petrochemical carriers, to very large gas carriers (VLGCs).

Around 65 ships have served international routes on 63 global trade routes with the support of representative offices in Singapore, Dubai and London.

The capability of this fleet is the foundation for expanding business to the cross-border carbon transport sector.

In its business development plan, PIS prepares LCO2 carriers operations that will transport carbon caught from industrial emission sources, such as power plants, refineries, and ammonia production.

He added that the carbon transported will be distributed to the land receiving terminal, which is then channeled through a pipeline network to an underwater storage location.

Indonesia has great potential in carbon storage, one of which is the Sunda Asri Basin which is estimated to be able to accommodate around 1.1 gigaton CO2.

With a strategic geographical position, PIS is optimistic that it can play an important role in making Indonesia the center of CCS/CCUS regional in Southeast Asia.

PIS' decarbonization efforts are also evident from the development of smart technology solutions through PIS-SmartShip.

By mid-2025, about 50 percent of the fleet has been equipped with the SmartShip 2.0 feature for operational efficiency and emission monitoring.

This technology is able to save 324 tons of fuel and 1,021 tons of CO2 in just one month of operation, as well as support the calculation of Carbon Intensity Indicators (CII) in real-time.

The application of this technology is an important bridge towards PIS' readiness to support carbon transportation. We are not only preparing reliable ships, but also a digital system that ensures energy efficiency and emission reduction throughout the supply chain," said Muthia.
