JAKARTA - World Ozone Day which is celebrated every September 16 is a momentum to raise awareness of the importance of the role of the ozone layer as the earth's protector of the dangers of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV), especially UV-B. PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) also plays an active role in the conservation of the ozone layer through the presence of the first Ozon Destroyer (BPO) facility in Southeast Asia at the Narogong Factory, Bogor, West Java. SIG also encourages the use of refrigerators (refrigerant) and ozone-friendly mild fire extinguishers (APAR) in the operating area.
SIG's Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni in a written statement, Wednesday, September 17, said that the service of BPO destruction facilities is a form of GIS' contribution in maintaining the sustainability of life on earth. Because BPO's destruction facilities not only contribute to the conservation of the ozone layer, but also as an effort to mitigate climate change. This is because BPOs that are not well managed will increase the intensity of Greenhouse Gas (GHG).
GIS, through a sustainable waste and waste management business line called Natabumi, continues to optimize BPO destruction facilities that have been operating since 2007. Nathabumi, which is operated by a subsidiary of GIS, PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk, is recorded to have helped 29 government institutions and companies from various industries in the destruction of BPO, including the food and beverage industry, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, petrochemicals, manufacturing, energy, mining, waste management, to oil and gas.
As of August 2025, Nathabumi has destroyed 103.86 tons of BPO that can damage the ozone layer, or has helped prevent the release of Greenhouse Gas into an atmosphere equivalent to 221,666 tons of Equivalent CO2. Types of BPOs destroyed include halo compounds widely used for fire extinguishers, refrigerants-CFC/HCCFC/HFC from cooling units such as AC and refrigerators, as well as SF6 commonly used in high voltage electrical equipment.
The process of destroying BPO is carried out with technology that is safe and environmentally friendly, where liquid and gas BPO waste is destroyed in cement shells with temperatures reaching 1,500 degrees Celsius stably. This BPO destruction facility also has a BPO processing permit from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment.
Vita Mahreyni added that the GIS' efforts in the preservation of the ozone layer are increasingly maximized through the initiative to use non-CFC (refrigerant) and non-HALON fire extinguishers in the operating area. Like PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBl), a GIS subsidiary that has used ozone-friendly cooling tools and APARs throughout the operating area.

GIS also implements the initiative to use hydrogen injection in production activities that help the combustion process in cement kilns be more perfect. This initiative supports optimization of production activities and efficiency in the use of fuel, as well as preventing the emergence of N2O substances which are chemical compounds that can also damage ozone.
"Maintaining ozone conservation is the collective responsibility of all nations in the world, including Indonesia. The fuel efficiency initiative to minimize emissions and the presence of this BPO destruction facility is a contribution of GIS to prevent radiation and reduce the impact of climate change," said Vita Mahreyni.
