JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo revealed that the Bagong Dam strengthens national water security and food security in Trenggalek Regency, East Java Province.
"We agree that water resource infrastructure is very important to achieve food self-sufficiency. One example is the construction of a dam which is then channeled through a primary irrigation system, secondary, to tertiary directly to agricultural land," said Dody as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 27.
With the presence of the dam, said Dody, the next focus is accelerating the development of a technical irrigation network.

The Ministry of Public Works continues to encourage the acceleration of dam infrastructure development in various parts of Indonesia in order to strengthen national water security and food security. The Bagong Dam has the main function of regulating the flow of the Bagong River to then be channeled to irrigation areas in the Trenggalek area.
With a capacity of 17.40 million m3, this dam will be the main buffer for irrigation water supply in the 977 hectares of Bagong Irrigation Area and supply raw water as well as flood control in the local area.
The presence of the Bagong Dam is expected to be able to flow water to irrigation networks continuously, so as to maintain the availability of water throughout the year.
With stable water supply, the dam will significantly reduce the risk of crop failure due to drought, especially in the long dry season.

In addition to irrigation benefits, this multifunctional dam also has the potential to supply raw water of 153 liters per second for people in Trenggalek, Pogalan, and Dam sub-districts.
Another function is to reduce the flood discharge of the Bagong River by 78.44 percent or the equivalent of 85.6 hectares in Pogalan, Gandusari, Dam, and Trenggalek Districts.
This dam is also expected to provide additional benefits as a tourism location and support the conservation of the Bagong Watershed (DAS).
