Deputy Minister of Environment/Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (LH) Diaz Hendropriyono said that Presidential Regulation (Perpres) regarding waste management will be published in the near future.

It is known that the government is currently preparing a new Presidential Decree to simplify the rules for handling waste in Indonesia.

The regulation will be a legal umbrella that integrates various aspects of waste management, including closing the final disposal site (TPA) with an open dumping system, processing waste into energy (WTE) and reducing waste pollution at sea.

"It's being discussed, I think it might be as soon as possible," Diaz said when met at the JCC, Friday, August 22.

The new Presidential Regulation will replace the previous three rules regarding waste management. The three rules referred to are Presidential Decree No. 83 of 2018 concerning Sea Waste Management, Presidential Decree No. 35 of 2018 concerning the Acceleration of Construction of Waste Processing Installations into Environmentally Friendly Technology-Based Electric Energy and Presidential Regulation No. 97 of 2017 concerning National Policies and Strategies for Management of Household Waste and Waste such as Household Waste.

Diaz could not confirm the exact date the policy was published. However, he said, Danantara will become the main investor in it.

"Now that is being discussed with the palace, with the President. Now, it will be the Danantara who invests. The Danantara will be the main party to make investments and those who buy PLN later," he said.

The government wants to operate modern technology to solve the waste problem.

The use of this technology is mainly for big cities that can handle a thousand tons of waste per day.

One of the efforts that can be done is to process waste into energy or WTE. This will later be regulated in the new Presidential Regulation.
