Highlighting The Trade War To Sharper Economic Inequality, Puan Asks The Government To Be Aware

JAKARTA - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR-RI) Puan Maharani asked the Government to be aware of global economic conditions. The reason is, currently in a quite challenging position.

Puan also highlighted the existence of geopolitical conflicts, trade wars, climate and energy crises, to economic inequality.

"We are faced with tensions and geopolitical conflicts, trade wars, climate and energy crises, increasingly sharp economic inequality, technological disruption, and a shift in global strength," he said at the MPR RI Annual Session and the 2025 DPR-DPD RI Joint Session, at the DPR Building, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Friday, August 15.

Puan said Indonesia is like many other countries, which are in the global vortex.

Therefore, according to him, the government together with all parties must have a solid foundation and a clear direction in winning the interests of the nation and state.

Indonesia, continued Puan, also requires the foundation of sovereignty, independence, and nationality, in order to be able to stand upright in the midst of world change without losing the ideals and identity of the nation.

Puan emphasized that the foundation of sovereignty does not only mean maintaining territorial boundaries, but also ensuring that the direction of foreign policy and the national economy is determined independently.

According to Puan, in today's multipolar world, Indonesia must be able to strategically position itself to fight for national interests in international forums. Starting from environmental issues, economy, geopolitical, global trade, to world governance

"Strengthening the foundation of independence does not mean blocking oneself from the world, but building domestic power so that it is not fragile in the face of external pressure," said Puan.

Di sisi lain, Puan bilang kemandirian nasional bukan sekadar soal infrastruktur dan modal, tetapi juga kualitas manusia yang menggerakkannya.

“Karena itu, investasi pada pendidikan, penguasaan teknologi, dan pembangunan karakter bangsa menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dari strategi kemandirian,” katanya.

On the other hand, Puan said that national independence is not just a matter of infrastructure and capital, but also the quality of humans who move it.

"Therefore, investment in education, mastery of technology, and the development of the nation's character is an inseparable part of the independence strategy," he said.
