JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) targets the revitalization of the Banyuwangi Main Market, East Java, to be completed by the end of 2025.

The market revitalization comes from the 2024-2025 State Budget of IDR 152 billion, which is used from structural, architectural, landscape, to mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems.

Market construction began to be carried out by the implementing contact of PT Agile Romauli Raya since October 2024 and is targeted for completion by the end of 2025.

The Banyuwangi Main Market is built on 10,600 square meters of land with two main buildings, namely the 2-story north side market consisting of 209 loss/keys and a 2-story south side market with 568 kiosks/loss.

Overall, the market's main building area reaches 15,872 square meters with a capacity of 777 kiosks/loss consisting of 194 kiosks and 583 stalls.

The market is designed as a Green Building Building (BGH) building that prioritizes energy efficiency, natural air circulation and disability-friendly facilities. Market buildings are divided into three main zones, including wet market areas, dry markets and culinary areas.

Later, the 1st floor will function as a wet zone for fish, meat and vegetable traders. Meanwhile, the 2nd floor for the dry zone contains clothing kiosks, grocery as well as local MSME snacks and culinary centers.

In addition, the market is equipped with a parking area of 4,733 square meters to accommodate 336 vehicles, emergency stairs, disabled pedestrian paths, and arranged landscapes.

The market front fasad is planned to have a retail function and hawker food, creating a walking culinary tour atmosphere in pedestrians 5 meters wide.

The regional arrangement will also be integrated with the Green Open Space (RTH) of Blambangan Square and Sri Tanjung Square, forming a 2-kilometer green corridor that is shady and comfortable as a public space.

With this concept, the Banyuwangi Main Market, which is located in the Blambangan Square heritage area, will become a new public space that is safe, healthy and comfortable for the community as well as an icon of Banyuwangi Regency that revives the traces of local history and culture.

PU Minister Dody Hanggodo said that the revitalization of the Banyuwangi Main Market does not only provide representative facilities for traders and MSMEs, but is also designed to drive the populist economy in the form of shopping tourism destinations that combine economic functions, heritage values and tourism attraction.

"The development of the market is a form of support for Astacita's vision which is explained in the 608 PU Strategy, with the aim of increasing regional economic growth as well as presenting a modern, clean and comfortable people's market," said Dody as quoted from his written statement, Monday, August 4.

With this arrangement, the market is expected to become a typical Banyuwangi shopping icon and support excellent tourism events, such as Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival and support local arts and culture.

Since its construction in 1981, the Banyuwangi Main Market has important historical value. The revitalization design combines Osing's distinctive architecture with a Dutch colonial post which is the hallmark of the old building in Banyuwangi.
