JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that it is preparing to improve the poverty reduction method in Indonesia.

This change was made considering that the method currently used has been used since 1998 without being revised.

Deputy for Social Statistics BPS Ateng Hartono explained that his party had carried out various processes, including internal studies, to formulate the new method.

"We have carried out various processes, both internal studies, including we have discussed repeatedly with statistical community forums. So we continue to process the discussion, even various inputs from other institutions such as Bappenas or experts, we continue to adopt inputs in order to improve the poverty calculation method," he said at a press conference, Friday, July 25.

Ateng said that his party was still waiting for further decisions regarding the implementation time, and hoped that this updated method would be ready to be implemented by 2026.

"Hopefully, we will just wait if we are from the technical team when it will be implemented next year in March 2026 or when we are still waiting and we are a technical team to continue to make preparations for the new method," he said.

Meanwhile, BPS Social Resilience Statistics Director Nurma Midayanti said that the poverty calculation method currently used is irrelevant to the current condition of the Indonesian people, because one aspect that will be adjusted is the list of commodities related to food consumption spending.

"In terms of commodities, the old method is actually a type of commodity that is no longer suitable for us to use. So we are still reviewing, we will see what commodities are used so that it reflects more the actual conditions related to food spending," he said.

He also highlighted that people's consumption patterns have changed a lot since this method was first implemented in 1998.

"We have calculated the current method from 1998, so it has been more than two decades. Food consumption during the past and now it is different, there is gen Z, the diet of eating in cafes," he said.

He said that currently, his party is finalizing the study of the improvement in the form of academic scripts and the process of changing this method is not only carried out by BPS, but also involves other institutions such as Bappenas and the National Economic Council (DEN).

"We will complete the study through academic texts, even in regulations it will also be strengthened so that later the decision of this new method is actually not pure by BPS, by Bappenas, even the DEN institution is now guarding the calculation of new methods," he said.
