JAKARTA - Public policy observer from Trisakti University, Trubus Rahadiansyah suspects that there is a geopolitical motive behind the planned data exchange cooperation between Indonesia and the United States (US).
He suspects that the US can use the data obtained to monitor China's movement through Indonesia. The reason is, China is a competitive US country.
This is in response to US President Donald Trump who leaked the framework of the RI-US trade agreement, including an agreement to access digital data and commitments.
"It seems that this is what natural resources are aiming for so as not to fall into other countries. Indonesia is included in the BRICS member. America may be afraid because of the BRICS block. It could be that the data indirectly monitors China's movement," he said when contacted by VOI, Wednesday, July 23.
In addition, products from China that flood the Indonesian market are considered to trigger stiff competition with Uncle Sam's country.
Trubus assessed that if the Indonesia-US trade cooperation was really utilized optimally, there would be a balance in the availability of products from the two major countries in the Indonesian domestic market. "Chinese goods here should be flooded. It should also be American goods," he continued.
In addition, he assessed that the cooperation between the two countries, especially related to data exchange, has the potential to trigger conflicts of interest between major countries. One of the factors that sparked this concern was President Prabowo Subianto's closeness to Russia.
"Moreover, recently, Pak Prabowo is very close to Russia. This is our concern, Indonesia is a place to fight for a superpower," said Trubus.
Trubus reminded that in global geopolitical dynamics, Indonesia has a strategic position that big countries can take advantage of for their benefit.
According to him, the cooperation in data exchange between Indonesia and the US could be an entry point for certain interests, including the influence on the Southeast Asia region.
Nevertheless, Trubus still opens up space for optimism for the cooperation, especially in terms of eradicating cross-border crimes.
