JAKARTA - The development of an integrated Green Industrial Estate in the Riau Islands Province (Kepri) is one of the strategic cooperation agreed by Indonesia and Singapore.
This commitment was symbolically confirmed by showing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the Sustainable Industrial Zone by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Singaporean Minister of Energy and Science & Technology Tan See Leng, witnessed directly by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Singapore, on Monday 16 June.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia explained that this initiative is in line with President Prabowo's direction to build mutually beneficial cooperation in the clean energy sub-sector.
"According to the President's direction to build mutually beneficial cooperation (win-win), we have asked the Singapore government to seriously consider the development of industrial estates aimed at downstreaming the new renewable energy-based," Bahlil explained in a statement to the media, Tuesday, June 17.
He explained that the development of this industrial area is designed with a comprehensive ecosystem. Energy supply will be guaranteed through clean energy-based cross-border electricity trading.
In addition, to keep emissions low, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology will be implemented through separate MoUs in this field.
According to Bahlil, this agreement opens up new market opportunities for national solar and geothermal energy. Meanwhile, CCS technology will provide solutions for industries that are difficult to decarbonize.
For the government, continued Bahlil, the development of green industrial areas in Riau Islands is expected to be a model for low-carbon economic development that is able to create thousands of new jobs and encourage the transfer of advanced technology.
Bahlil detailed that the downstream program is an absolute requirement in this cooperation.
He ensured that the main component manufacturing industry such as solar panels and cables would be established in Indonesia as part of the deal.
"The added value that we will build is solar panels, the industry will be in Indonesia. Even those cables will also be built in Indonesia," said Bahlil.
Bahlil is optimistic that this project will run smoothly because it has been carefully prepared.
"We will build this industrial area together in Karimun and Bintan to be close to Singapore. The total investment beyond that alone is around 10 billion US dollars, and most importantly, there are already potential investors," said Bahlil.
