JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) ensures that the Red and White Fishery Village (KNMP) development program will emphasize sustainability aspects. The development of 1,100 fishing villages targeted for completion in 2027 will not only focus on infrastructure and production facilities, but also the long-term welfare of coastal communities.

"This Red and White Fishing Village is not limited to building projects, but how to ensure that the development carried out produces sustainable economic activities for the welfare of the community," said Special Staff to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for Public Relations and Public Communications Doni Ismanto Darwin in a written statement, Monday, June 16.

Until now, the KKP has received 910 proposals for submissions to be the location for the implementation of the Red and White Fisherman Village program from various regions in Indonesia.

Hundreds of these proposals are being reviewed to determine the magnitude of the potential, acceptance of the community to the status of the proposed land as the location for the KNMP development.

Doni emphasized that in-depth studies are important so that the program is right on target. The program for developing fishing villages whose success has been tested in Biak, Papua, also aims to bring the independence of coastal communities, increase productivity and welfare.

Expert Staff to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for Economic, Social and Cultural Affairs Trian Yunanda added, in the early stages of implementing the KNMP program, his party will choose 100 villages that are really ready for development. Social aspects, potential, productivity and land status are the main considerations.

"From the survey we conducted and we have reviewed a number of proposals, the problem is that many regions are proposed, but the land is not yet clear. This is certainly a challenge in itself, because we cannot build in locations where ownership is not clear," he said.

Later, the construction of KNMP this year targets 100 villages and another 1,000 villages to be continued from 2026 to 2027. In addition to coastal areas, the KNMP program targets the cultivation village, the majority of which are cultivators. KNMP management will then involve cooperatives as business drivers.

To ensure that the KNMP program runs continuously, the KKP is not limited to building infrastructure and production infrastructure, but providing social assistance and engineering. This is to ensure that business activities from upstream to downstream are integrated into one village run continuously.

In addition, the KKP will maximize the role of thousands of fishery extension workers to assist the community at the KNMP location.

"We don't want to just build, but together with the community to grow, so that our entire community structure has the independence of what we have built," he explained.

The KNMP program received positive support from stakeholders, ranging from local governments, the private sector to the community. PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, for example, is ready to support the construction of the Fisherman's Fuel Filling Station (SPBN) at the KNMP location, including bridging the distribution of subsidized fuel oil to fishermen.

VP Retail Fuel Sales PT Pertamina Patra Eko Ricky Susanto said his party was ready to support the distribution of SPBN in the area.

"Of course with terms and conditions, because we have to guarantee partners, both cooperatives and business materials that run SPBN. Economically, they get benefits so that they can be sustainable, then have permits," he said.

Meanwhile, Carno, a fisherman representative from Cikiruhwetan Village, Pandeglang, hopes that the KNMP program can solve the abrasion problem that hit the settlements of villagers.

In addition, a number of fishermen in their place of residence have difficulty accessing subsidized fuel, especially for fishing boats above 10 GT. "We strongly agree and will socialize this program to other fishing friends," he concluded.
