JAKARTA - President Director of Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) Toto Nugroho revealed that the policy of imposing high import rates imposed by America on China brought fresh air to the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry.
Toto said this then caused many Chinese electric vehicle companies to become more aggressive in wanting to enter Indonesia.
"Now China is very aggressive to be able to enter Indonesia to make our basis for providing EV battery solutions or energy storage batteries to America," Toto said in a Hearing Meeting with Commission XII of the DPR RI, Monday, February 17.
Toto explained that currently, America imposes a 40 percent import rate for electric vehicle products. Unlike Indonesia, he said, it only charges a tariff of 10 percent. Toto considered this to be an advantage if Indonesia developed a more massive electric vehicle industry.
"The advantage we get if we make the battery production base not only for Indonesia, but also for the global need, including for the United States," explained Toto.
IBC, said Toto, is also developing a roadmap for the development of the battery industry. For this reason, he emphasized the importance of overseeing the regulation of the electric vehicle battery industry from upstream to downstream.

"It cannot only be from the cell battery, regulations are made, but when we process the finalization from upstream to downstream. That must also be given a regulation in order to facilitate both our own investment and development," he explained.
Finally, Toto also emphasized the importance of export governance and importing electric vehicle batteries that need more attention, especially in encouraging the creation of more competitive products.
"Data manages battery recycling, this is very important," said Toto.
