JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) stated that until February 14 it had distributed 1.2 million kiloliters (KL) of biodiesel type 40 (B40) which was required (mandatory) to use since January 1, 2025.

"As of today, around 1.2 million KL B40 has been distributed," said Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya Listiani, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, February 14.

He said, for the mandatory use of B40, by 2025 it is targeted to be able to distribute fuel for environmentally friendly vehicles of 15.6 million KL which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 41 million tons.

According to him, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently conducting a 50 (B50) biodiesel trial which will later be tested for roadworthiness with automotive industry entrepreneurs in the country.

As for increasing decarbonization efforts in the transportation sector, as well as accelerating the implementation of Euro 5, the Director General of EBTKE said that the government is currently preparing regulations so that there is a carbon economy value obtained from reducing emissions using biodiesel.

"If later emissions from B40 or biodiesel can be claimed to be one carbon value, it can be cashed, hopefully this can help Pertamina accelerate Euro 5," he said.

Biodiesel is a low fuel of emissions made from a mixture of vegetable oils processed into the methyl ester of fatty acids or fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) with fossil fuel fuels.

This means that biodiesel type B40 has a mixture of 40 percent FAME, and 60 percent fossil diesel.

B50 which has a mixture level of 50 percent each, or a pure B100 made only from the FAME of palm oil.

The government is implementing a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of an increase in the target of reducing carbon emissions in total (Enhanced-Nationally Determined Contribution/E-NDC) from 29 percent or 835 million tons of carbon dioxide to 32 percent or 912 million tons of CO2 by 2030.
