Many Workers Exposed To COVID-19 To Death, KSPI Will Strike Work On August 5 5

JAKARTA - The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) will hold a strike on August 5. This is motivated by the number of workers or laborers who were exposed to COVID-19 and died.

KSPI President Said Iqbal said tens of thousands of workers in 1,000 factories spread across 24 provinces would stage an action as a form of protest to the government and factory management about the number of workers exposed to COVID-19.

"The form of action is to stop production, representatively will leave the factory but remain in the company environment. Of course with health protocols, maintaining distance, wearing masks, hand sanitizers and no crowds. Furthermore, said Iqbal, workers who took part in the action would raise a white flag as a symbol of their surrender in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Raising the white flag because the workers have given up on the many workers who have died and been exposed to COVID-19," he explained.

So far, said Iqbal, the PPKM policy has not been effective in suppressing active Covid-19 cases. Due to the fact that manufacturing companies still employ 650 workers, so many workers are exposed to COVID-19. In fact, KSPI has repeatedly asked for an arrangement of working hours so that all workers do not enter at the same time.

In addition, said Iqbal, the union has repeatedly asked for those who are self-isolating (isoman) to be given free vitamins and medicines through the BPJS network of health.

"Repeatedly shouting no layoffs, repeatedly shouting not to be sent home by cutting salaries, and repeatedly asserting that the Omnibus Law on Job Creation is detrimental to us workers," he said.

Iqbal said, in this strike action, there are three demands that will be submitted by the workers in the action. First, save the lives of workers and the people, prevent the transmission of COVID-19, prevent the explosion of layoffs.

Then, second, demanding the cancellation of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation because it is more detrimental to the workers. Third, apply district/city sectoral minimum wages in 2021.
