Dear Customers, Bank Jatim Urges You To Immediately Change Your Magnetic-based Debit Card To A Chip-based One Before July 31, 2021

JAKARTA - PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Timur Tbk (Bank Jatim) appeals to customers to immediately replace their magnetic stripe-based ATM debit card to a chip-based ATM debit card no later than July 31, 2021. This is done to improve customer transaction security.

Director of IT & Operations at Bank Jatim Tonny Prasetyo in Surabaya said the replacement was also in line with the Bank Indonesia (BI) program through Circular Letter Number 17/52/DSKP regarding the implementation of the National Standard for Chip Technology and the use of a six-digit online Personal Identification Number for ATM cards and/or Debit Cards Issued in Indonesia.

"The use of ATM chips is also aimed at mitigating risks in the theft of customer data and transactions (skimming) which has been rife in Indonesian banking in recent years", he said, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, July 7.

He hopes for customers to immediately replace the old ATM debit card with an ATM chip debit card because if it is more than the specified time limit, the old ATM debit card cannot be used anymore.

"We do this to improve the security and convenience of customers in transactions", he said.

The mechanism for replacing an ATM chip card, he said, is quite easy, namely, customers just need to bring their Identity Card, Savings Book, and old ATM debit card to the nearest Bank Jatim office network, and replace the ATM debit card free of charge.

Previously, ATM cards accompanied by debit cards with magnetic tape were often considered vulnerable to skimming crimes. The case of skimming has become a payment system problem in the global financial industry. Solutions emerged with chip technology that was more difficult to duplicate.

This has already been applied to credit cards. However, the application of chip technology requires a higher investment cost than magnetic tape.
