JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Budi Karya Sumadi said President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had a vision to make Indonesia the world's maritime axis. Higher education institutions, in this case the School of Shipping Science (STIP) Jakarta, are expected to be able to create competent maritime human resources.

"To realize the president's vision, competent, innovative, creative, and competitive human resources (HR) are needed both nationally and internationally," he said in the webinar 'Getting to Know the Applied Masters of STIP Jakarta,' Monday, June 21.

According to Budi, maritime universities such as STIP Jakarta have an important role in creating reliable human resources to realize shipping connectivity and safety.

"I personally hope that STIP can be a pioneer in improving the competence of Indonesian maritime human resources," he said.

On that occasion, Budi also opened an applied master's program or an applied master's degree program at STIP Jakarta. Budi said the applied master's program was the first time in Indonesia. STIP became the institution that opened this lecture program.

Budi said the applied master's program by STIP Jakarta has two (2) Study Programs (Prodi) namely Marketing, Innovation and Technology Study Program and Safety and Risk Engineering Study Program. According to him, this is a concrete manifestation of the Ministry of Transportation's commitment in preparing superior, professional and competent transportation human resources.

"STIP Jakarta has produced the best graduates in the field of sea transportation throughout Indonesia. We hope that the quality will continue to improve," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Vocational Education at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbud-Ristek) Wikan Sakarinto said that the STIP Jakarta applied master's program is expected to produce graduates who are competent and superior, and have a leadership spirit.

Furthermore, Wikan believes that the establishment of the study program in the applied master is in accordance with what is needed by the world of work in the transportation sector. According to him, the newly launched program will be able to advance the world of transportation in the country.

"With the establishment of the study program, we believe that we have a link and match with stakeholders and industry," he said.
