JAKARTA - The government is exploring plans for connectivity between Sabang and the Nicobar Islands, India. Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said the plan is still being discussed further after President Prabowo Subianto's meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dudy said the idea came up to make the relationship between Indonesia and India closer. However, he did not detail the form of connectivity that would be prepared, including whether it would be in the form of a port, ship service, or other transportation cooperation.

"The plan is so that we and India are closer. So there is indeed that thinking," said Dudy at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 7.

When asked whether the port from Sabang would be connected to a ship to Nikobar, Dudy did not give certainty. He said the government was still exploring the plan.

"We are exploring further," he said.

Dudy also has not confirmed whether there will be a visit or technical follow-up to the location discussed in the near future. According to Dudy, the government is still looking at the development of cooperation with India.

"Later we will see. How is the cooperation," said Dudy.

The plan for the Sabang-Nikobar connectivity became one of the issues that emerged after the meeting between Prabowo and Modi. Sabang is at the western end of Indonesia, while Nikobar is in the Indian region which is geographically closer to the western region of Indonesia.
