JAKARTA - In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, PT Heinz ABC Indonesia (ABC Indonesia) held a media discussion entitled "Circular Economy in Action: Synergy of Multisectoral Partnerships in Accelerating Sustainable Waste Management".

This activity is a forum for dialogue between various stakeholders to discuss the role of collaboration in accelerating more sustainable waste management through the implementation of a circular economy in Indonesia. The discussion featured Agus Rusly, Director of Circular Economy and Waste Management of the Ministry of Environment; Reza Andreanto, General Manager of the Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization (IPRO); Andri from Kita Olah Indonesia; and Lestri Fajrinia, Head of Research and Development of PT Heinz ABC Indonesia.

In the midst of increasing attention to sustainability and the optimal use of resources, the circular economy is increasingly becoming an approach implemented in various countries. The circular economy encourages materials to remain in the use cycle for as long as possible through reduction, reuse, and recycling.

In practice, the circular economy is close to everyday life. When people sort through garbage from their homes, collect bottles or used packaging for a recycling bank, they have become part of the circular economy effort. Through this approach, used packaging does not always end up in landfills, but can be processed into raw materials or new products that are useful.

Mira Buanawati, General Counsel and Head of Corporate Affairs of PT Heinz ABC Indonesia, said that the success of the circular economy requires collaboration involving various parties, ranging from the government, industry, waste management organizations, communities, to the public.

"ABC Indonesia supports national agendas in the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the circular economy in Indonesia. One of them is through a partnership with the Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization (IPRO) as a platform for collaboration between producers in post-consumer packaging management. We believe that sustainable waste management cannot be done by one party alone. It takes cross-sector synergy to build a system that is able to encourage more materials back into the recycling chain and provide greater benefits for the environment," said Mira, in his statement, quoted Friday, July 3.

This commitment is in line with the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 75 of 2019 concerning the Roadmap for Waste Reduction by Manufacturers. This regulation encourages manufacturers to play an active role in reducing waste through various efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R), as well as supporting the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which is an approach that places manufacturers as part of the solution for post-consumer packaging management.

Agus Rusly, Director of Circular Economy and Waste Management at the Ministry of Environment, explained that the transformation towards a circular economy is one of the important steps to answer the challenges of waste management in Indonesia.

"Indonesia continues to strengthen the transformation of waste management from a linear approach to a circular economy that places waste as a resource that still has value. The implementation of EPR is an important instrument to ensure that manufacturers are also responsible for the post-consumer packaging they produce. The success of this agenda requires strong collaboration between the government, industry, waste management actors, and the community so that the national waste reduction target can be achieved effectively and sustainably," explained Agus.

Meanwhile, IPRO as an organization formed by manufacturers on a non-profit basis, and focuses on supporting post-consumer packaging management, plays a role in the collective implementation system for selective collection and recovery of packaging so that it can be managed more effectively and return to the recycling chain.

"Packaging does not stop its journey after being consumed/used by consumers. Through collaborations involving various parties, we have ensured the growth of packaging that can eventually be collected selectively and managed through the recycling channel. The more packaging that can be recovered, the less the burden of waste management leakage that occurs in the environment and landfills," said Reza Andreanto, General Manager of IPRO.

In line with this, Andriansyah, Founder of Kita Olah Indonesia emphasized that effective waste management can also provide social and economic benefits for the communities involved in the chain.

"Collection for recycling is not only about collecting recyclable materials. This program also creates economic opportunities for waste management communities, collectors, and recycling partners. When people sort waste, then the material is successfully entered into the recycling chain, the benefits are not only felt by the environment, but also by the community involved in the process," he said.

This discussion also highlights the importance of the public's role in supporting the circular economy. Simple steps such as sorting waste from home, reducing the use of unnecessary materials, and ensuring that recyclable packaging goes into the right collection channels can have a big impact if done consistently.

Through collaboration involving the government, industry, waste management organizations, communities, and the public, ABC Indonesia hopes that more post-consumer packaging can become part of the economic cycle. This joint effort not only supports a cleaner environment, but also helps build a more efficient and sustainable resource management system for future generations.
