JAKARTA - Tsingshan Group is encouraging the development of a green and sustainable nickel industry and supply chain through collaboration with various stakeholders in the Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference and Expo (ICM) 2026 which will take place in Jakarta on June 2-5, 2026. This step is in line with the increasing global demand for responsibly produced and managed critical minerals to support the energy transition and low-carbon development.

As a forum that brings together governments, industry players, international organizations, academics, and various other stakeholders, ICM 2026 is a dialogue space to discuss strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of the Indonesian mineral industry through the application of sustainability principles, the development of green industries, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.

In the ICM 2026 forum, the Governor of North Maluku, Sherly Tjoanda, conveyed that the success of industrial downstreaming is not only reflected in investment growth and increased production, but also from the benefits felt by the community and the quality of the environment which is still maintained.

"As one of the centers for industrial development in North Maluku, Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) has played an active role in encouraging regional economic growth while supporting the improvement of environmental and social conditions in a sustainable manner," said Sherly.

A similar view was also expressed by the Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Ciyong Zou. According to him, the increasing global demand for critical minerals places Indonesia in an important position in the world mineral value chain. Therefore, the development of the mineral sector needs to be in line with economic growth, emission reduction efforts, and the creation of wider social benefits for the community.

As part of the ICM 2026 series, the Tsingshan Group together with UNIDO held a High-Level Forum on Mineral Sustainable Development and Eco-Industrial Parks. This forum focuses on the development of sustainable industrial areas through the implementation of the Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) principle, ESG practices, and efforts to encourage a greener and more efficient industrial transformation.

This forum was also marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tsingshan Holding Group and UNIDO on June 4, 2026, to support the implementation of the Industrial Park Pilots for Sustainable Development of Mineral-Based Industries in Indonesia (IP4SD). This cooperation supports the implementation of the Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) principle in mineral-based industrial areas through increased resource efficiency and more sustainable environmental performance.

Through this program, Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) and Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) were designated as pilot projects for Eco-Industrial Parks. This initiative is expected to support the transformation of mineral industrial areas into green industrial areas.

Vice President of Tsingshan Holding Group, Scott Ye, said that the development of a sustainable mineral supply chain is an important part of supporting the global industry's transformation towards a low-carbon economy.

"Through collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, UNIDO, industry players, communities, and various other stakeholders, Tsingshan is committed to supporting the transformation of the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) and the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) towards a greener, more efficient, and responsible industrial system, as well as encouraging collaboration throughout the mineral supply chain so that economic benefits, environmental protection, and improved community welfare can run in a balanced manner," he said.

The IP4SD program is also in line with the Indonesian Government's policy in the development of environmentally conscious industrial areas as regulated in Government Regulation Number 20 of 2024 concerning Industrial Zoning, which encourages the application of the principles of energy efficiency, circular economy, and clean production.

Through collaboration between the Government, Industry players, and international organizations, this initiative is expected to strengthen Indonesia's position as a competitive and sustainable mineral industry center at the global level.
