JAKARTA - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI has expanded its digital payment services by introducing the QRIS Cross Border feature in China through the wondr by BNI application. With this feature, BNI customers can now transact at merchants connected to Alipay and UnionPay by simply scanning the QR code, without the need to exchange cash.

The launch of the initiative was carried out jointly with Bank Indonesia (BI) and payment service providers, non-bank financial institutions, and banks on April 30, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen cross-country payment system connectivity. The event was also attended by BI Governor Perry Warjiyo, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno.

Senior Executive Vice President Network and Sales BNI Sri Indira said the development of this feature provides convenience for customers and supports the integration of global payment systems.

"This launch is a tangible step for BNI in supporting an increasingly global digital payment ecosystem. We want to ensure that customers can transact easily anywhere, including in China, while encouraging an increase in foreign tourist transactions in Indonesia," he said in a written statement.

Through this feature, wondr by BNI customers can directly make payments at various merchants in China that have been connected to the local digital payment network. In contrast, Chinese tourists can also transact at BNI merchants in Indonesia using their payment applications that have been integrated with QRIS.

BNI considers this step to be an important milestone in strengthening the interconnection of payment systems between Indonesia and China. In addition to increasing the ease of cross-border transactions, this feature also has the potential to encourage an increase in inbound transactions, especially from Chinese tourists who are one of the main contributors to the national tourism sector.

From the industry side, the strengthening of the digital payment ecosystem continues to show a positive trend. Bank Indonesia recorded the volume of digital payment transactions reaching 14.39 billion transactions in the first quarter of 2026, growing 33.76% year-on-year, in line with the increasing digital acceptance in various sectors.
