Trenggalek-Ponorogo National Road which was closed by a landslide can now be passed by vehicles in a limited manner.
The access road was previously covered by a large new material from the cliff at KM 16, Pacar Village, Nglinggis Village, Tugu District, Trenggalek Regency, East Java Province.
The Ministry of Public Works through the East Java-Bali National Road Implementation Agency (BBPJN) Directorate General of Road Construction carried out intensive handling to clean up the landslide material that covered the entire road body.
The landslide occurred on Tuesday, March 3, at around 17.30 WIB after the Tugu and surrounding areas were hit by moderate to heavy rain since 14.30 WIB. The landslide material in the form of large-sized rocks closed access to both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo emphasized that maintaining connectivity is the government's top priority in emergency disaster situations.
"Connectivity is the lifeblood of people's lives. In a disaster situation, the most important thing is to ensure that access remains open so that people's mobility, humanitarian assistance and logistics distribution do not stop," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Friday, March 6.
To handle the landslide, BBPJN East Java-Bali through the PPK 2.3 team of East Java Province deployed personnel and a number of heavy equipment to clean the stone material from the roadbed.
The handling is focused on breaking large-sized stones that have an estimated volume of around 68 cubic meters. In the process, the team deployed four units of heavy equipment, namely one breaker unit, two excavator units and one loader unit.
Large stone material was first broken using a breaker. After that, the debris was lifted using excavators and loaders to open the road body.
Head of BBPJN East Java Bali Directorate General of Road Construction Javid Hurriyanto explained that the handling was carried out gradually by considering safety factors because there was still the potential for rocks to fall from the cliffs around the location.
"The handling is carried out gradually by prioritizing the breaking of large rocks first using a breaker. After the material is broken, only transportation is carried out so that the road body can be opened immediately," he said.
After the cleaning was carried out, access to the Trenggalek-Ponorogo National Road can now be passed by vehicles in a limited manner.
Even so, road users are asked to remain vigilant when crossing because the process of cleaning materials and securing the slope is still being carried out in the landslide.
The results of the field inspection also showed that the structure of the retaining wall at the location did not experience structural damage due to soil movement. The damage occurred only in the form of cracks due to the impact of stone material.
During the handling process, the PU Ministry also coordinated with the Trenggalek BPBD, TRC-PB Multisector, TNI, Polri and local people to assess the location and traffic arrangements.
