JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government has prepared tax incentives to support the strengthening of research and development of semiconductor technology in the country.

According to him, the incentive is given to encourage closer collaboration between the industrial sector and universities, especially in research activities, technology development, and talent strengthening in the field of semiconductor technology.

"Tax incentives already exist in relation to R&D and education, where the government can provide tax deductions to corporations that cooperate with universities, ranging from 200 to 300 percent," said Airlangga at the 2026 Semiconductor Talent National Briefing at the Batavia Tower, Jakarta, Thursday, March 5.

Airlangga said that the development of the semiconductor industry requires strong ecosystem support, including the involvement of the education world in preparing human resources and research relevant to industry needs.

In this case, Airlangga assessed that the role of universities and related ministries was important to bridge the collaboration between industry and educational institutions so that the incentive facilities could be optimally utilized.

"Well, this from the director general of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights can also bridge between industry and universities as well as the Minister of Finance, because the role of the Minister of Finance in relation to tax deductions is very large," he said.

This step is expected to support Indonesia's efforts to build a high technology ecosystem and increase the competitiveness of the national industry.

Meanwhile, said Airlangga, there is currently a discussion regarding a special project between the Government of Indonesia and the British semiconductor company, Arm Limited.

He explained that the project was outside the 15,000 engineer training program with the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI), whose contract signing was witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto in London, England, last February.

"(Special project) outside 15,000 (engineers). But this is the next phase, we are still in negotiations. Therefore, we cannot discuss," said Airlangga when met on the sidelines of the event.

The former Golkar Party Chairman added that the value of the special project is estimated to reach around US$ 200 million. "There is about (the value) of US$ 200 million," he said.

In the project, Airlangga emphasized, Arm will focus on software development and design, not manufacturing.

"So Arm is always going towards software, towards design. If the manufacturer is, yes, TSMC, Nvidia. So, it's a different approach that the government is approaching," he said.
