JAKARTA - The construction of the Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP) Lateng in Banyuwangi, East Java, has been completed. The first phase of the KNMP project, which has been completed 100 percent, was built as a thematic area for the industrialization of culinary tourism.

The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono explained that the concept of KNMP Lateng is different from other fishing villages. If in a number of areas the development is focused on strengthening production facilities, while in Banyuwangi the approach taken is direct downstreaming.

"In some other areas it is more towards production and production infrastructure. But here it is downstream. So direct downstream, fishermen's catch is brought here to be processed into culinary products," said Trenggono as quoted from a written statement, Wednesday, March 4.

According to Trenggono, the thematic model applied at the Banyuwangi KNMP will be able to drive the economy at the lower level because there is a combination between production and culinary.

"This thematic model is expected to be able to create an interconnected economic ecosystem, from fishermen as producers to culinary business actors as processors and marketers," he said.

In addition, KNMP Lateng also has an attraction in terms of architecture. Six main buildings stand by adopting the Osing Tribe's traditional house style and the Gajah Oling batik ornament, combining modern elements and local wisdom of Banyuwangi.

This concept also strengthens the position of the Banyuwangi area as a culinary tourism destination based on marine products.

To support fishermen's operations, the government ensures the availability of supporting facilities such as ice factories and the construction of Fishermen's Fuel Filling Stations (SPBN). According to Trenggono, the construction of SPBN will be carried out through coordination with Pertamina and related agencies to ensure fuel quotas for fishermen.

"SPBN is not only in Banyuwangi, but we will install it in all KNMP. We have talked to Pertamina and related parties for the allocation of quotas," he explained.

Furthermore, said Trenggono, the government is also opening the opportunity for boat assistance for fishermen in need, according to data collection in the field.

In the KNMP area there are 20 kiosks filled with local business actors. One of them, Ramli, owner of Kiosk 2, admitted that the arrangement of the area was more orderly, making business activities more orderly.

"Usually it's crowded at night. The daily income is around Rp. 200 thousand to Rp. 250 thousand. Hopefully in the future the toll will not be burdensome," he said.

Trenggono said the government would conduct an evaluation in the next two years to measure its impact on local economic growth and improved fishermen's welfare.

With the thematic downstreaming concept, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is optimistic that KNMP Lateng will be able to become a coastal development model that not only strengthens the fisheries production sector, but also creates a new economic growth center based on culinary and tourism with direct impact on the welfare of fishermen and their families.
