JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) continues to strive to accelerate the handling of the Karang Baru Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) in Aceh Tamiang Regency, Aceh Province, after the Sumatra flash flood.
SPAM is the backbone of the supply of clean water for the Karang Baru, Kuala Simpang and Rantau areas, including to support the operations of the Aceh Tamiang Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Kuala Simpang.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that handling SPAM Karang Baru was a priority because of its vital role, especially for the Aceh Tamiang Regional Hospital.
"Clean water is a basic need, especially for hospitals. Therefore, we ensure that the water supply is maintained while preparing for permanent construction so that in the future this system will be even better," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Friday, January 23.
The Director General of Cipta Karya at the Ministry of PU, Dewi Chomistriana, explained that the acceleration of the handling of the Karang Baru SPAM was carried out through the design and build method, including the construction of a new water treatment plant (IPA) and reservoir to increase the capacity and reliability of the system.
"We will build a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 100 liters per second, a new reservoir with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters and a steel IPA that we will hold. In total, our target for completion is July 2026," he said.
Dewi added that the construction of a 1,000-cubic-meter reservoir had begun with the implementation of the first pile.
In addition, the PU Ministry will also add pre-sedimentation buildings to overcome the very high level of turbidity of raw water after the disaster.
"We see that the water is very cloudy, far above the threshold. Therefore, we added a pre-sedimentation tank so that the processing is more optimal and does not require excessive chemicals," he said.
While waiting for the construction to be completed, continued Dewi, his party has taken temporary handling steps, including repairing existing drinking water facilities managed by PDAM Tirta Tamiang and optimizing the use of mobile IPA.
"This effort is carried out so that the supply of clean water, especially to the Aceh Tamiang Regional Hospital, is maintained," he explained.
Based on the results of the Ministry of PU's identification, the damage to drinking water infrastructure due to flash floods in Aceh Province was recorded at 52 SPAM, spread across 11 regencies/cities, with a total capacity affected reaching 2,151 liters per second.
The handling is carried out gradually, integrated and collaborated with local governments and local SPAM managers.
