In order to overcome tidal flooding and floods in the northern part of Medan, the Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo stated that his party had prepared a budget of around Rp. 268 billion to continue revitalizing Lake Siombak, Medan Marelan District, Medan City, North Sumatra.

"We will build three retention ponds and safety embankments around Siombak Lake. The total budget needed is around Rp. 268 billion and will be carried out in stages," said Minister Dody Hanggodo while inspecting the location in Medan, quoted from ANTARA, Saturday, November 8.

He said the need for a water control embankment in the area reached about 3 kilometers. Of that number, he continued, 1.3 kilometers have been completed in 2024, while the remaining 1.7 kilometers are planned to start construction in 2026.

In addition to embankments, the government will also build three retention ponds to hold water before flowing to Siombak Lake, considering that the lake water level is quite high.

"Water cannot be thrown directly into the lake because the water level is higher. Therefore, a retention system is needed to accommodate water first," he said.

Dody added that the construction will be carried out in stages from 2024 to 2028. In 2026 it is planned to build two retention ponds, followed by completion of 1.7 kilometers of embankments in 2027, as well as the construction of one additional retention pond in 2028.

He asked for the support of the Medan City Government (Pemkot) to accelerate the process of land acquisition needed for the construction of retention ponds and further embankments.

"The central government's funding is ready, but land acquisition must be assisted by the Medan City Government so that the public understands the purpose of this project," he said.

According to Dody, the revitalization of Lake Siombak is part of the northern part of the Medan flood prevention program as well as an increase in urban water management systems.

"If the land can be completed immediately, the entire work series can be accelerated," he said.
