JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded that the number of cyber attacks that occurred in Indonesia throughout 2024 reached more than 370 million incidents, or an increase of about 25 percent compared to the previous year.
The surge is an important warning for all parties to strengthen digital resilience amid the acceleration of the transformation of the national payment system.
BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta revealed that the increasing cyber threat shows the challenges of digitalization not only related to technology but also regarding intersystem interoperability and public trust in digital services.
According to him, this aspect is the main foundation in building a strong and sustainable digital ecosystem.
"We have long started to build digitalization of our digital transformation, starting for a long time from those who don't believe people are reluctant to use QRIS, people are reluctant to use BI-FAST, now all participating in defending QRIS, now there is a trust, meaning," he said at the Opening Ceremony Day 2 FEKDI X IFSE 2025, Friday, October 31.
Filianingsih emphasized that trust is the most crucial element in the digitalization process.
"So one of the main elements of digitization is because when we talk about digitization, we change people's mindsets, so for that we need one belief, so we know the trust that takes a long time to build but it takes only second to break but it takes forever to rebuild," he explained.
He added, if digital risks such as cyber attacks or interoperability disturbances are not well anticipated, then public trust in digital services can decrease and slow down the technology-based economic transformation process.
"We really have to take care of this trust, don't let the trust that has been formed be for digitization because there were challenges that we didn't anticipate that we couldn't mitigate and we couldn't finish the cyber interoperable attack that didn't go well, it made people reluctant to do it again," he said.

He explained, as an anticipatory step, BI has prepared a Blueprint of the 2030 Indonesian Payment System (BSPI) which will be implemented from 2025 to 2030.
Filianingsih conveyed that through this blueprint, BI seeks to answer digitalization challenges by encouraging synergy, innovation, collaboration and payment system security.
"Not only strengthening infrastructure but also together with the existing industry management and also encouraging innovation and we also continue to carry out international cooperation so that we don't fall behind, we are not complacent about playing domestically," he explained.
Based on BI data, internet penetration in Indonesia currently has reached 80.66 percent, or about 229 million people out of the total population. This figure is higher than the global average of 68.7 percent of the world's about 6.66 billion population.
With the increasing level of digital connectivity, Filianingsih emphasized the importance of strengthening cybersecurity as the key to maintaining the sustainability of digital payment systems while maintaining public trust in national digital transformation.
