BI Tries QRIS In South Korea, Target Connected Next Year

JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) is conducting a limited trial or sandbox for the use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) in South Korea.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo targets the payment system to be officially used in the country next year.

"Today we are launching with South Korea, testing, sandboxing. God willing, next year it will start to connect," Perry told the media crew after the Indonesian Digital Economy Festival (FEKDI) and IFSE 2025, Thursday, October 30.

Perry explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, QRIS played an important role in the distribution of social assistance and currently, QRIS users have reached almost 60 million people, with around 40 million of whom are MSME actors.

He added that the transaction value through QRIS reached almost IDR 60,000 trillion.

Furthermore, Perry said that the use of QRIS is now also starting to spread to the sports sector.

He gave an example of his experience while playing golf, where golf payments were made using QRIS without the need for cash.

For information, QRIS is currently connected to various cross-border transaction systems, including Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, and China.

"Cross border international or QR, we have connected with Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and we have connected with Japan, then connected with China. Today we will contact South Korea and continue to connect with India, Saudi Arabia," he explained.
