JAKARTA - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono admitted that Indonesia has not been able to optimize marine and fishery resources. He said the situation had been going on for a long time, even since Indonesia's independence in 1945.

Trenggono explained that Indonesia actually has strong means and means of production in the marine sector, including the ability of fishermen who are known to be tough to navigate the sea.

"Traditional fishermen really understand the environment, the weather, really understand when they should arrest and when to stop. It has been 80 years since this sector has not been touched properly," Trenggono said at the 100 Economist Indonesia Facilities in Jakarta, Tuesday, October 28.

According to Trenggono, only during the era of President Prabowo Subianto's leadership, fishermen received serious attention. Trenggono assessed that so far traditional fishermen have only received a sporadic tool assistance model that is no longer sustainable.

Therefore, Trenggono chose to form a Red and White Fisherman Village (KNMP) which received a positive response from President Prabowo.

In the future, said Trenggono, Prabowo is targeting the construction of 1,000 fishing villages per year in the period 2026-2029.

"That is starting in 2025, the beginning of Pak Prabowo's administration, he asked us to build 1,000 starting with 100 Red and White Fishermen's Villages," he said.

He considered that the presence of KNMP was a tangible form of the government's alignment with traditional fishermen. The program is believed to have a significant economic impact on coastal communities.

"We have calculated it roughly. We are still investigating because it has been one year. So, every time we build it, it will increase productivity to 100 percent. So, income of Rp. 3 million has increased to Rp. 6 million," he added.
