The Ministry of Public Works (PU) will carry out a building reliability assessment of 80 large Islamic boarding schools (ponpes) in the eight largest provinces, including West Java, East Java, Banten, Central Java, Aceh, South Sumatra, South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan.

A total of 80 Islamic boarding schools are used as samples to evaluate and improve the standards of safe and habitable buildings for students.

Thus, it is hoped that there will be no more incidents such as at the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School, Sidoarjo, East Java.

PU Minister Dody Hanggodo emphasized that the assessment was not intended to make mistakes, but as an effort to build learning together.

"It's not looking for mistakes, but to build learning together how to make the study room strong, cool and safe," said Dody at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Jakarta, Tuesday, October 14.

The move is part of a strengthened cross-ministerial synergy through the signing of a Joint Agreement between the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Religion and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to Dody, the Ministry of Public Works acts as technical partners to assist local governments and the Ministry of Religion in strengthening pesantren infrastructure throughout Indonesia.

"Through today's agreement, we want to strengthen the role of local governments as the spearhead of development so that every pesantren, no matter how small, get the same attention," he said.

In addition to the assessment, the Ministry of Public Works also encourages the provision of training and certification of construction workers for students.

It aims to change the spirit of gotong royong which has rooted in pesantren into certified construction skills.

"We actually want to strengthen it with knowledge. Therefore, God willing (Ministry) PU will train and certify the students as construction workers, for free (free)," explained Dody.
