JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) admitted that currently there is still a lot of inequality in urban areas, such as slum houses next to tall buildings.
Therefore, AHY assessed that future development needs to use the urban regeneration concept.
The urban regeneration that AHY meant was to organize what was already there, revitalize, fix and implement regulations properly.
Thus, AHY believes that urban development will also foster the community's economy.
"So, the economy grows and then the people are also not trapped in an imbalance. Because there are two sides to the currency when the city advances with technology with various modernities presented, it can also lead to gaping inequality," AHY said when met after attending The 54th EAROPH Regional Conference 2025 entitled "Transforming Urban Landscapes: Driving Progress, Innovation and Sustainability for Global Futures" in Jakarta, Monday, October 6.
Regarding the existence of slum houses in the city, said AHY, currently there is still a lot of houses in slum settlements occupied by more than one family.
"We still see the face of urban poverty. In addition to tall buildings, there are slum areas, small areas, very small houses. There is no sanitation, no lighting, but four families are staying from each other. There are still happening here and there," he said.
According to AHY, the urban concept is the right way in urban development. The reason, he said, was that the concept used an approach to reduce poverty and inequality.
"On the other hand, the approach is to reduce poverty and inequality. So, people first design, people first development is not jargon, but indeed development is more aimed at how our families can be more comfortable and then have a good job," he explained.
The chairman of the Democratic Party saw that development should not be trapped by only preparing space for physical development.

What must be prepared is to prepare an ecosystem so that people live in it can live safely, prosperously and sustainably. In addition to urban regeneration, AHY also supports the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept.
"We hope that we also organize cities in Indonesia. There are two approaches, I tell you how to make everything safer, comfortable with TOD. Then there is a concept called urban regeneration, urban community regeneration," he concluded.
