JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has prepared a grand plan to make the world heritage site area in Bangka Belitung a "carbon free island".

This was conveyed by the Director General of Marine Spatial Planning of the KKP Kartika Listriana at the National Workshop for Spatial Planning at the blue Carbon Ecosystem in Jakarta, Thursday, September 11.

" Certain national strategic areas (KSNT) of world heritage sites, including those in Bangka Belitung, have also been initiated to be pushed into carbon free island," said Kartika.

Kartika said the move was not only a symbol, but also part of Indonesia's efforts to build a sustainable coastal management model that could be imitated by the world.

"Of course, in the future these things can be planned and managed in an integrated manner with the priority planning in each region," he said.

According to him, efforts to make Bangka Belitung a carbon free island do not stand alone, but is part of the KKP's big blue economy strategy. The government is preparing 17 KSNT indicative locations for blue carbon reserves, one of which focuses on Bangka Belitung.

"Currently, 17 indicative locations for the zoning of certain national strategic areas for blue carbon reserves have been formulated, which will present national interests for the management of the blue carbon ecosystem," he said.

In addition, Kartika continued, there are plans to also re-develop certain national strategic areas for blue carbon reserves on the north coast of Central Java.

"It will also accommodate blue carbon for development in coastal and sea areas. We recommend this," said Kartika.
