JAKARTA - As a form of commitment to strengthening digital banking service innovation, Bank Mandiri officially presents the QR feature between countries in Japan through the Livin' by Mandiri application. This service allows customers to make payments using QRIS directly from Livin' at various Japanese merchants, providing easier transactions that are more practical.

The presence of this feature continues the implementation of the Inter-State QR which was previously available in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Japan is the fourth country to be connected to this service, as well as affirming Bank Mandiri's commitment to providing a seamless international transaction experience for customers.

Bank Mandiri SVP Transaction Banking Retail Sales Erin Young said that the expansion of this service is a real support for Bank Indonesia's vision of strengthening cross-border payment connectivity.

"The presence of this service will make it easier for customers to transact abroad and expand the reach of Indonesia's digital payment ecosystem on the global stage," he explained in a written statement, Friday, August 29.

Currently, Livin' by Mandiri is one of the largest digital banking applications in Indonesia, with more than 34 million users and a total transaction value of Rp2,477 trillion until July 2025. This massive user base encourages the adoption of QR between countries, including in Japan, to ensure the convenience of customer transactions in various parts of the world.

The high public interest in QRIS payments is reflected in the achievement of using the QR Payment feature in Livin' until July 2025. The number of users reached 12 million, growing 47 percent year-on-year (YoY) with a transaction value growing 119 percent reaching IDR 94 trillion.

Rapid growth was also seen in the QR Inter-State service. As of July 2025, inter-State QR users in Livin' grew 157 percent YoY to 49 thousand, with transaction value reaching Rp61 billion, an increase of 184 percent YoY. The contribution of the value of inter-State QR transactions to QR Payment only contributed 0.065 percent. However, the high growth trend shows the great potential of this service as one of the customer's favorite features when traveling abroad.

One of QRIS' advantages in Livin' by Mandiri is the flexibility of sources of funds. Customers can choose a source of payment funds from a savings account or Mandiri credit card as needed before the transaction, providing complete control over fund management.

Furthermore, QR Inter-State services in Japan can be used in merchants connected to Japan's national QR-based payment system, namely JPQR Global, through the Netstars network. This integration makes the transaction process faster, more efficient, and comfortable for customers who visit or live in Japan.

In addition to QRIS, Livin' also has the Tap to Pay feature as a practical payment alternative for merchants who have not received QR-based payments. With an Android phone with NFC, customers can make contactless payments like using a physical card. This feature supports the source of funds from Mandiri Debit Visa or Mandiri Credit Cards so that customers do not need to bring a wallet or card.

The Tap to Pay feature is the ideal solution in Japan, when some merchants still rely on card-based payments. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology allows the payment process instantly only by attaching the phone to an EDC machine that supports contactless transactions.

For cash transaction needs, Bank Mandiri also provides solutions for customers in Japan. Through the Livin' application, customers can open a JPY multicurrency account and connect it with Mandiri Debit Visa. Thus, customers can withdraw directly from yen account balances at ATMs with Visa logos throughout Japan.

Digital payment ecosystems and international banking services continue to grow. Therefore, we want to ensure that customers have all options, ranging from QRIS, contactless transactions with Tap to Pay, to cash access through a foreign exchange account. All designed to provide an international-ready transaction experience, "added Erin.

Through synergy with Bank Indonesia, global partners, and industry players, Bank Mandiri is committed to providing services that make it easier for customers while strengthening Indonesia's position in the global payment system.

Our vision is to be a financial partner who is always present at every step of customers, both at home and abroad. With sustainable innovation, strategic collaboration, and adaptive technology, we are optimistic that we can expand Indonesia's role in the global payment map, as well as provide services that combine comfort, security, and flexibility," he concluded.

The presence of the QR Inter-State feature in Japan strengthens the company's role in providing end-to-end international transaction solutions. Starting from shopping at merchants, practical payments through EDC, to cash withdrawals at foreign ATMs, all can be done in one Livin' by Mandiri application.
