JAKARTA - For decades, residents of Bulu Hamlet and Mah Beser Hamlet in Tuwiri Kulon Village, Merak District, Tuban Regency, East Java, had to work hard to get clean water. Limited water sources, too deep groundwater conditions, and remote surface water sources force residents to rely on rainwater to be stored during the rainy season, and buy water from tank cars during the dry season.

Responding to these needs, and in line with the commitment of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) to support improving the quality of life of the community around the company's operational areas, GIS builds clean water facilities and infrastructure in the form of upper water reservoirs with a capacity of 12,000 liters and lower water reservoirs with a capacity of 8,000 liters, as well as pipelines of 2 km which are equipped with a water distribution system to residents' homes. Assistance through the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program is a concrete solution that is directly felt by the community, especially in two hamlets that have been experiencing a clean water crisis.

The head of Tuwiri Kulon Village, Dasmiyati, expressed his appreciation for GIS' contribution which was considered consistent in paying attention to the needs of the community. Thanks to the assistance of GIS, now its citizens can enjoy the ease of access to clean water that is channeled directly to the house.

"We, on behalf of the village government and the people of Tuwiri Kulon, express our gratitude to GIS for not only being present as an industry actor, but also village development partners who actively assist the community," said Dasmiyati.

Dasmiyati admitted that previously residents had to buy clean water up to 4 tanks with a capacity of 5,000 liters per month to meet their daily water needs and for livestock drinks. The costs incurred are quite burdensome.

"Now, with the existence of drill wells, as well as water reservoirs and pipelines from GIS, residents can simply pay much cheaper monthly fees. Currently, 94 families have benefited from this program," said Dasmiyati.

According to Dasmiyati, the procurement of clean water facilities and infrastructure is carried out through a joint financing scheme. Drilling wells funded by Village Funds (DD), while the pipeline system to residents' homes is facilitated by the TJSL program from GIS. The Association of Population Drinking Water Users (HIPPAM) manages this clean water facility so that its operations and sustainability can be maintained. Positive impact is also felt directly by residents, one of which is Rasidan (77 years), a resident of Bulu Hamlet. He expressed his gratitude for the clean water facilities that are now flowing directly to residents' homes.

"In the past we had to buy water, it was expensive. But now it has flowed to the house and the costs are light. Thank you to GIS and the village government who have fought for this for the residents," said Rasidan.

SIG's Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni, in a written statement, Monday, August 11, said that SIG always carries out the TJSL program in a measured and sustainable manner through a collaborative approach with all stakeholders, including the village government and society. This approach is the key so that every program that is run really reaches the community and creates a long-term impact.

"SIG does not only focus on business operations, but also has a social responsibility to help build the quality of life of the community around the company's operational areas. Access to clean water is a basic need that is a priority in supporting the health, productivity, and welfare of citizens. The hope is that this clean water infrastructure is not only used optimally, but is also maintained and developed sustainably for the sustainability of the next generation," said Vita Mahreyni.
