32.7 Million Passengers Use Trains, Highest Occupancy Reaches 241 Percent

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded a surge in public interest in using rail transportation during the period January to July 2025.

As for the first seven months of this year, a total of 32,758,315 customers were recorded using train services on the islands of Java and Sumatra consisting of 27,885,545 long-distance train customers and 4,872,770 local train customers managed by the main KAI.

KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba said KAI recorded 10 train trips with the highest occupancy and even 241 percent.

He revealed that the high occupancy rate was influenced by a dynamic passenger travel pattern, where one seat can be used by more than one customer in one operational day.

"For example, a passenger rides from Purwokerto to Semarang, then the seat is used again by other passengers from Semarang to Solo. This system makes the trip more optimal while increasing seating occupancy," said Anne in her statement, Sunday, August 10.

Anne added, some of the trains on the list have unique characteristics that make it a customer's favorite choice.

He gave an example, such as the Joglosemarkerto Train offering the sensation of a round trip that connects many cities in Central Java and Yogyakarta, ideal for tourists who want to explore various destinations without changing modes of transportation.

Meanwhile, the Blambangan Express train has the longest route that runs from the eastern tip of Java Island in Ketapang to Jakarta, allowing passengers to enjoy coastal panoramas, mountains, to urban areas on one trip.

According to him, for tourism lovers, these routes also offer a variety of interesting destinations. Riding the Malabar Train, passengers can enjoy the cool air of Bandung and then continue their journey to the tourist city of Malang.

He added that KA Wijayakusuma and KA Ranggajati are also connecting the southern route of Java which is rich in culinary and cultural, starting from Banyumas batik to exotic beaches in Cilacap and Jember.

"KAI will continue to provide safe, comfortable, and affordable services for the community. Trains are not only transportation modes, but also bridges that connect customers, culture, and of course play a role in improving the regional economy," concluded Anne.
