Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that there has been a change in people's consumption patterns, from shopping at physical stores to digital platforms such as marketplaces.

Airlangga conveyed that based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) there was significant growth in the online retail sector, where in 2024 transactions through online retail or marketplaces grew by 7.55 percent.

"We see that consumption from the public is seen shifting spending to online shopping. We see that this online retail transaction was only released by BPS last year, not on track, but this year it has started in track retail and the market for the growth of quarter to quarteral (qtq) is 7.55 percent," he said at the Press Conference on Economic Growth in the Second Quarter of 2025, Tuesday, August 5.

He explained that one of the sectors that recorded the highest growth in online sales was personal care products and cosmetics, with a transaction value of Rp. 67.6 trillion or grew 16.95 percent on an annual basis (year on year / yoy).

"Then the shift to online one of the examples that grew high was personal care and cosmetics, it rose close to 17 percent," he said.

In addition, Airlangga added that household products and office equipment also showed excellent performance, with a total transaction of Rp72.8 trillion or grew by 29.38 percent compared to the previous year.

Airlangga added that there was a significant growth in the number of e-commerce transactions, where in 2018, the number of transactions was recorded at 280 million, while in 2024 it jumped dramatically to 3.24 billion transactions.

Furthermore, he revealed, the financial performance of the retail sector still shows a positive trend.

"If we look at the financial performance of the retail sector of the three factory companies, the second minimarket is one of the many outlets in the mall in all of the first semester, the growth is close to 5 percent, 4.99 percent, 6.85 percent and 12.87 percent. This shows that related to the issue of Rohana and Rojali, this is an issue that has been blown up, so the facts are different and of course this is what we have to see," he said.

Airlangga added that people's purchasing power is maintained in the midst of uncertain global conditions as reflected in core inflation (core inflation) which remains stable at 2.32 percent and growth in Gross Fixed Capital Formation (PMTB) which reached 6.99 percent in the second quarter of 2025.

Previously, BPS reported that Indonesia's economic growth in the second quarter of 2025 reached 5.12 percent on an annual basis or year-on year (yoy), which was driven by strong public consumption.

Deputy for Balance and Statistics Analysis of BPS Moh. Edy Mahmud explained that household consumption remains the main motor in terms of expenditure, with a contribution of 2.64 percent to national economic growth.

"Indonesia's economic growth in the second quarter of 2025 when compared to the second quarter of 2024 or yoy grew by 5.12 percent," he said at a press conference, Tuesday, August 5.

In addition, he also highlighted that shifting consumption to online platforms is a new trend that has not been fully seen directly in everyday life, in contrast to conventional shopping in physical stores.
