JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that the number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2025 was recorded at 23.85 million people or equivalent to 8.74 percent of the total population.

Deputy for Social Statistics BPS Ateng Hartono said that the number of poor people in March 2025 was 23.85 million people, a decrease of 0.21 million people compared to the September 2024 period and a decrease of 1.37 million people to March 2024.
"As a comparison in September 2022 compared to March 2022, poverty increased 0.03 percent, then from March 2023 to March 2025 poverty gradually decreased," he said at a press conference, Friday, July 25.
Ateng explained that the criteria for poor people in Indonesia are determined based on per capita expenditure which is below the poverty line.
Based on data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) in March 2025, the poverty line is set at IDR 609,160 per capita per month, or around IDR 20,305 per day.
"We all know that what is called the poor population is when the expenditure is below the poverty line. The March 2025 poverty line based on Susenas, which has already been stated at IDR 609,160 per capita per month. If we compare it with September 2024, it will increase by 2.34 percent," he said.
Ateng added that BPS also recorded a percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2025 of 6.73 percent, an increase compared to September 2024 which was 6.66 percent.

Ateng said that when compared to September 2024, the number of poor people in March 2025 urban areas increased by 0.22 million people from 11.05 million people in September 2024 to 11.27 million people in March 2025.
Meanwhile, in the same period, the number of rural poor people actually decreased by 0.43 million people from 13.01 million people in September 2024 to 12.58 million people in March 2025.
