JAKARTA - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is not worried about the 50 percent tariff for Indonesian copper products set by US President Donald Trump. This is because the majority of exports of Freeport copper products are sent to China.
For your information, Donald Trump has set a copper import rate of 50 percent and this policy will be effective from August 1, 2025.
President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas said that so far the United States is not one of the countries that is the goal of importing copper produced by the Freeport smelter.
"We haven't sold it to America all this time. Most of them go to China, China," he said, in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 16.
According to Tony, the policy issued by Donald Trump has no direct impact on Freeport Indonesia's business.
Even so, continued Tony, it is not impossible that there will be an indirect decline in copper demand.
"Maybe it can be thought of. Whether the derivative industry is from China, or the copper derivative industry purchased from us is subject to US tariffs, yes of course the copper demand (demand) might be reduced," he explained.
Tony also said that Freeport Indonesia will keep copper production safe and sustainable. He said, the main focus remains on meeting domestic industrial needs.

Furthermore, Tony said the copper cathode smelter in Gresik, East Java, will start operating next week and its production capacity will reach 441,000 tons per year.
"This smelter has finished, it is operational and will produce cathodes starting next week. Gold bullion has been produced, silver bullion has been produced, this will be very good for the domestic ecosystem," he said.
