JAKARTA - PT Freeport Indonesia targets the production of copper cathodes from its new smelter to reach 441,000 tons in 2025. The plan is for Freeport to start its first production next week.
President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tony Wenas said the smelter had been completed and was ready to operate fully.
"The plan is that next week the first production of a new smelter of copper cathode. This year a total of 441,000 tons is planned," he told the media crew at the DPR RI Building, Wednesday, July 16.
Tony said that mining downstream has now achieved copper production with a purity of 99.99 percent.
These products can later become raw materials for further industries such as cables, electrical equipment, and electric vehicle components.
In addition to copper, Tony continued, the PTFI smelter located in Gresik, East Java has also produced gold and silver bullion.
"We as a company, this smelter is finished, it is operational and will produce cathodes starting next week. Gold bullion has been produced, silver bullion has been produced, this will be very good for the domestic ecosystem," he said.
Downstreaming in the mining sector, continued Tony, especially copper, has reached its final point.

He said the next challenge was to build a metal-based manufacturing industry to absorb domestic processed products.
The Hilirization from the mining sector is final. The further DOWNstream we need is on the manufacturing side. If we are 99.99 percent metal has been produced," he explained
Tony revealed that currently around 50 percent of PTFI's production is still being exported.
Especially products with metal levels below 99.99 percent.
"Right now, around 50 percent of it is being reported. Because there are some of our products whose levels are below 99.99 percent. This is still being exported. More than 50 percent Antam," he explained.
