JAKARTA - The Indonesian government continues to show its commitment to strengthening global economic partnerships. After conducting trade negotiations with the United States, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto continued his visit to Brussels, Belgium.

As for there, Airlangga accompanied Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in a number of important meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and Belgian King Phillipe.

The meeting became a strategic moment to accelerate the completion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) negotiations which has been going on for a decade.

"This IEU-CEPA we have negotiated for the 10th year, more than 19 rounds. But all the issues will be resolved and this is certainly a new milestone in the midst of an uncertainty situation," he said, quoted on Sunday, July 12.

Furthermore, Airlangga said that the Government of Indonesia and the European Union Commission intensively continued to conduct joint discussions to accelerate the completion of the IEU-CEPA.

He hopes this deal can open up wider business opportunities, increase legal certainty, and provide strategic platforms to deepen dialogue and cooperation on relevant economic issues today.

According to him, although the dynamics of global trade is still colored by uncertainty, Indonesia and the European Union remain committed to building fair trade and investment relations based on regulations.

"The agreement through the IEU-CEPA is also believed to be an important milestone in increasing mutually beneficial bilateral trade and investment," he said.

Airlangga said that Indonesia and the European Union are also aware of the importance of accelerating the implementation of the IEU-CEPA agreement, given the urgency to create stability and expand market access and strengthen mutually beneficial economic relations and build reliable strategic partnerships.

According to him, the CEPA negotiation process has now reached the finalization of technical issues, fine-tuning, and compiled a more detailed time frame to reach the IEU-CEPA ratification stage.

Previously there were many things, but of course the global situation, geopoliticals all changed. And also including Indonesia being a strategic partner for Europe. Because we are also seen in the process of entering into OECD, so we are considered to have started to become like-minded countries. Then Indonesia will also become a country that continues to improve its economy," said Coordinating Minister Airlangga.

Airlangga also emphasized that the IEU-CEPA agreement was held in a scheme that is mutually beneficial and prioritizes the interests of both parties.

Meanwhile, he explained that Indonesia-EU trade relations continued to show significant developments with a trade value of 30.1 billion US dollars in 2024.

In addition, Indonesia's trade surplus against the European Union has also increased rapidly, reaching 4.5 billion US dollars in 2024, up from 2.5 billion US dollars from the previous year.

They see in various regions, ASEAN is very strong and the anchor is Indonesia. After Indonesia, behind the queue, Malaysia wants to, Thailand wants to. So Indonesia is the pioneer to work with various countries," he concluded.
