JAKARTA - Pertamina through Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (Persero) synergize in developing Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 3 megawatts (MW) in the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK), North Sumatra.

The signing of the cooperation between Pertamina NRE and PTPN III (Persero) through the Bangun Guna Serah agreement and the development of new and renewable energy capacity in the Sei Mangkei SEZ area took place in Jakarta, on Monday, July 7, 2025, carried out by Pertamina NRE President Director John Anis and PTPN III (Persero) Business Director Ryanto Wisnuardhy, and witnessed directly by the Deputy President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Oki Muraza, Pertamina's Director of Business Transformation and Sustainability Agung Wicaksono, and PTPN III (Persero) President Director Denaldy Mulino Mauna.

President Director of Pertamina NRE, John Anis said that the operation of this PLTS will have the potential for added value from carbon trading, where for PLTS 3 MW capacity can reduce carbon emissions by 4,100 Tons of CO2e/year or the equivalent of 102.5 thousand Tons of CO2 in 25 years of cooperation with Pertamina NRE.

"Hopefully, the renewable energy we provide can provide added value for industries in the Sei Mangkei SEZ. This collaboration between Pertamina and PTPN III (Persero) also supports the realization of the electricity supply business plan (RUPTL)," explained John Anis, Monday, July 7.

John Anis added, Pertamina NRE also continues to conduct studies and innovations on energy development by utilizing plants, so that later the Plantation-based energy ecosystem will be even greater which can provide domino effects on the community in terms of improving the economy to Indonesia's energy sovereignty.

In addition to PLTS with a total installed capacity of 5 MW, Pertamina NRE and PTPN III (Persero) have also collaborated to manage biogas power plants (PLTBg) at the Sei Mangkei SEZ with an installed capacity of 2.4 MW which utilizes palm oil liquid waste or palm oil mill effluent (POME).

From the operation of the PLTBg, it is targeted to produce carbon credit in the near future with a volume of 66 thousand tons equivalent to CO2.

Meanwhile, the Business Director of PTPN III (Persero), Ryanto Wisnuardhy, explained that the New Renewable Energy (EBT) produced from solar power will not naturally run out, even be sustainable if managed properly, and is one of the relatively efficient sources of energy in terms of technicality and development costs.

"PTPN III (Persero) together with Pertamina NRE have and will continue to optimize the optimal use of EBT in Indonesia," Ryanto explained.

This collaboration is a continuation of the PLTS 2 MW project which has been operating since 2021 in the same area. Pertamina NRE sees the sustainability of this project as an ideal collaboration model between the energy and plantation sectors.

The resulting solar energy also supports local energy resistance and attracts investors looking for green energy-based industrial areas.

This environmentally friendly energy-based program supports the government's efforts to optimize the national renewable energy potential and efforts to attract more investors to invest in the Sei Mangkei SEZ.
