JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) cooperates with the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) to expand the reach of the National Fish Research and Logistics System (Stelina).

The system was developed to meet global standards and ensure that fishery products traded from Indonesia come from legal and environmentally friendly practices.

"Stelina as an intersystem-based collaborative solution with QR code technology output will strengthen the upstream and downstream integration system. This provides a complete picture of the tracing of fishery products to consumers," said Director General of Strengthening Competitiveness for Marine and Fishery Products (PDSPKP) KKP Tornanda Syaifullah as quoted from his official statement, Monday, June 23.

Through Stelina, said Tornanda, every stage of fish travel from cultivation or capture to consumers can be recorded transparently. The system is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market.

"This system also dismissed the issue that Indonesian fishing products are illegal or produced by not being environmentally friendly," he said.

GDST Executive Director Huw Thomas said that the integration of Stelina with the tracing system owned by GDST shows Indonesia's commitment to protect sustainable fishery resources and ensure its safety for consumption by the global community.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Arrest Association (AP2HI) Janti Juari assessed that the implementation of global standard Stelina is a breath of fresh air for the increase in the value of Indonesian fisheries trade.

According to him, the system can strengthen the position of shrimp and tuna commodities in the export market.

The export value of Indonesian shrimp in 2024 will reach 1.68 billion US dollars or 28.2 percent of the total export value of fishery.

The commodities were exported to the United States, Japan, China, the European Union and Asean countries. Meanwhile, Tuna, Cakalang and Tongkol exports reached 1.03 billion US dollars or 17.4 percent with the main aim of Asean, United States, European Union, Japan and the Middle East.
