JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) plans to develop the Red and White Cooperative in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province which is targeted into one of the potential areas as a national salt center.
This was conveyed by KP Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono when met by reporters after giving a speech at "16th Anniversary of CTI-CPF and Coral Triangle Day 2025" in Jakarta, Thursday, May 22.
"We will help later through the Red and White Cooperative, one of which is we are developing the construction of the Red and White Fisherman Village," he said.
According to Trenggono, the Rote Ndao area has a lake area that is in line with Australia and has up to 10 million salt production with an area of about 10,000 hectares.
If Indonesia is able to produce half of Australia or about 5 million tons of salt, it will be enough to meet domestic needs.
"Our needs, right, are almost 5 million tons for consumption, industry and CAP. CAP is for oil drilling and so on," he said.
Therefore, said Trenggono, his party plans to develop the Merah Putih Cooperative in the area through the construction of the Red and White Fisherman Village.
"The community is like in (Regency) Sabu Raijua, we are also developing it. We will help them later through the Red and White Cooperative, one of which is," he said.
Previously, the KKP targeted Rote Ndao Regency in NTT to become one of the potential regions as a national salt center.
The Director General of Marine Management of the KKP Koswara said that currently most of the salt needs for the food and pharmaceutical industries are still met from imports. This is because Indonesia has not been able to produce salt according to industrial needs.
"Currently, more than half of the salt needs for the various food and pharmaceutical sectors still have to be met from imports. This happens because the quality of local production salt has not been fully able to meet strict industrial standards," Koswara said as quoted from his written statement, Wednesday, May 21.

He said that his party had also mapped potential land in East Rote and East Coast Districts with an estimated total land of more than 1,000 hectares. The construction of salt centers in Rote Ndao is planned to support industrial needs.
According to Koswara, the Rote Ndao area was chosen because it has great potential with low rainfall and high level of salinity.
This identification is an initial stage to ensure technical and ecological feasibility such as water sources and social aspects in the development of sustainable salt land.
"We also have support from the Regional Government, the Regent has conveyed his commitment. Hopefully this can be carried out in 2025," he said.
