JAKARTA - Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Maman Abdurrahman said more than 64 percent of MSMEs in Indonesia are currently owned or managed by women.

Maman said that the role of women in MSMEs is quite dominant, especially in the creative economy sector.

"That's why the role of women is very important and strategic," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, May 5.

He appreciated the performance of IPEMI administrators and members in empowering women MSME entrepreneurs, especially Muslim entrepreneurs throughout Indonesia.

"Women have a significant contribution in supporting increased resilience and national economic independence," he said.

This strategic role is in line with the government's efforts to encourage active women's participation in the productive economic sector in an inclusive and sustainable economic transformation.

However, amid the dominance of women's roles, Maman also reminded of the challenges of digitalization which are still looming.

He revealed, only about 12 percent of the 65 million MSMEs in Indonesia have adopted digital technology effectively.

This digital gap is considered to hamper the potential of MSMEs to develop further in the era of the digital economy.

He believes digitization will be a bridge for MSMEs to increase productivity, innovate, expand market reach to global arenas, and increase added value for products and services.

"I believe the business transformation with the right technology adoption will help MSME entrepreneurs access the global market and increase added value and services," he said.
