JAKARTA - The Indonesian halal industry continues to show impressive performance in the global market. It was noted that the export value of national halal products reached 64.11 billion US dollars throughout 2024.

This achievement is one of the main drivers of Indonesia's economic growth which grew 5.03 percent last year, with the processing industry contributing 18.98 percent.

Deputy Minister of Industry (Wamenperin) Faisol Riza said the halal industry had been seen as a source of new economic growth.

"This is expected to support the achievement of Indonesia's economic growth target of 8 percent by 2029," said Faisol on the Kick Off halal Indonesia International Industry Expo 2025 agenda, quoted on Tuesday, April 29.

Faisol assessed, as a country with the second largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia has a great opportunity to become a global halal production center.

However, the Deputy Minister of Industry emphasized that Indonesia still needs to strengthen the branding of halal products in the international market.

The reason is, Indonesia has fallen far behind other countries regarding power in the global halal market.

"Other countries have already built strong positions in the global halal market. Thailand positions itself as the world's halal kitchen, South Korea is the largest halal tourism destination and Brazil is the largest supplier of halal poultry. Indonesia must also take a strategic role through strengthening the national halal industry ecosystem," he stressed.

In the report of The State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2023/2024, Indonesia rose one rank to third in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator, after Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

Even so, Faisol admitted, the national halal pharmaceutical and cosmetic sector still needs more attention to compete globally.

To accelerate the strengthening of the halal industry, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has taken a number of strategic steps, ranging from the construction of halal industry infrastructure, facilitation of halal certification, strengthening branding, increasing awareness, awarding Indonesia halal Industry Awards (IHYA) to expanding international market access.

In an effort to expand the market and attract investment, the Ministry of Industry supports the implementation of the Indo 2025 halal which will be held on September 25-28, 2025 at ICE BSD City, Tangerang, Banten.

The exhibition will involve the food and beverage sector, textiles andPPares, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, education, Muslim-friendly tourism as well as various sectors supporting the halal ecosystem.

In the last year's edition, Indo's halal managed to attract more than 12,000 visitors with a transaction value of Rp1.3 billion and a total commitment of Rp6 billion.

This year, organizers are targeting a bigger achievement in line with the increase in exports of halal products.

"I hope that the Kick-off Halal Indo 2025 activity will be a good first step for the growth of the halal industry in Indonesia. Let's jointly advance the national halal industry as an opportunity and strategically increase the competitiveness of Indonesia's industry in the future," he concluded.
