PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI is ready to support the West Java Provincial Government's plan to reactivate a number of non-active railway lines in the West Java region.
The routes planned to be reactivated include the Cipat-Padalarang, Banjar-Pangandaran, Bandung-Ciwidey, and the route between Garut-Cikajang.
KAI Vice President Public Relations, Anne Purba said that as an asset manager at the non-active cross-crossing, KAI is committed to supporting the reactivation process by returning assets that have been managed and optimized so that they can return to their proper functions.
"KAI welcomes the initiative of the West Java Provincial Government in reviving railway lines that have not been operating for a long time. KAI is ready to support it by returning assets managed by KAI for the benefit of this reactivation," he said in an official statement, Friday, April 25.
Anne emphasized that the process of building or reactivation of railway lines is entirely the authority of the government, as stipulated in Law Number 23 of 2007 concerning Railways.
However, continued Anne, KAI is ready to collaborate and support every stage that will be carried out by the government.
Anne also said that KAI had made significant investments in order to improve the quality of railway services. The investment includes rejuvenating train facilities by procuring 612 passenger trains and 54 locomotives, as well as modifying existing facilities.
"So that when the railway lines are successfully reactivated, KAI facilities are ready to serve passengers," he said.
In anticipating the possibility of electrification on the routes to be reactivated, KAI has also invested in the addition of 29 Electric Rail Trainsets (KRL). The new KRL fleet consists of 16 new trainsets and 2 backfit trainsets from PT INKA in Madiun, as well as 11 trainsets imported from CRRC, China, which are currently undergoing dynamical testing and will be delivered in stages.
"The investment that we have carried out shows KAI's commitment to continue to improve services and support the development of rail transportation in Indonesia, including in West Java," said Anne.
KAI believes that the reactivation of the railway line initiated by the West Java Provincial Government will have a significant positive impact on the community. Trains, as a means of public transportation with a large carrying capacity, can be an effective solution to overcome congestion problems.
In addition, the re-operation of the railway line also has the potential to reduce the burden of road maintenance costs that must be issued by the government.
