JAKARTA - The threat of trade rates by the winner of the United States (US) Presidential Election (Pilpres) Donald Trump does not specifically target BRICS member countries.

According to the Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wamenlu) Arief Havas Oegroseno, the threat also targets other countries that cooperate with trade with the US.

The tariff has nothing to do with BRICS, because those who are subject to tariffs will sometimes be subject to non-BRICS. If I look at various existing analyzes, yes Europe, Japan, Korea, that's basically a country that has created trade (with the US)," said Arief quoting Antara.

Despite this, Trump has previously issued a strong threat to BRICS countries if they continue plans to create alternative currencies other than the US dollar.

In his upload on the Truth Social platform, Trump said that the use of currencies other than the US dollar is a form of resistance to the American economy.

In response to this, Arief said that for certainty from the tariff policy, it is better to wait when Trump is officially sworn in as the 47th US President on January 20, 2025.

Furthermore, regarding Indonesia's membership in BRICS, Arief explained that Indonesia is preparing strategic steps to contribute to these organizational programs.

Indonesia will follow directions from Brazil as Chair of this year's BRICS before determining its priorities.

"We have just received it, so we have to first hear from Brazil what the program is, what can be advanced, what our interests will be like," he said.

However, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia underlined that BRICS provides a great opportunity for economic cooperation that can be developed with other member countries.

As for Brazil, as the holder of this year's BRICS presidency, on Monday (7/1) announced that Indonesia has officially become a full member of the international organization.
