JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung revealed, Indonesia has a significant potential for new and renewable Energy (EBT) at 3,687 giga watts (GW).

"But the potential for EBT that has been utilized has only reached 0.3 percent," said Yuliot in his remarks at the Electricity Connect, Wednesday, November 20.

Yuliot detailed, based on its type, the largest EBT potential is occupied by solar energy with a potential of 3,294 GW while only 675 MW have been utilized.

As for hydro potential, Indonesia is known to have a potential of around 95 gigawatts with potential that has been utilized at 6.6 gigawatts. For bioenergy, Indonesia has a potential of 57 gigawatts, which has only been utilized by around 3.4 gigawatts.

"Coal gasification, there is potential that we have not taken advantage of. Yes, while in this implementation we have utilized coal gasification of 250 megawatts," Yuliot continued.

Meanwhile, our wind energy potential has a potential of around 155 gigawatts and has only been utilized by around 152 megawatts.

Then for sea energy, Indonesia is known to have a potential of 63 GW and has not been utilized at all.

Finally, Indonesia's geothermal potential is 23 GW and only 2,597 MW has been utilized.

"So this potential range is quite large. Of course this is a part that we can consolidate, how can the potential and utilization be not too far away, so there will be efficiency and also how we see it as our commitment to reduce emissions, especially net zero emissions in 2060," explained Yuliot.

Furthermore, Yuliot said, in order to take advantage of new and renewable energy, the economic activities that occurred were still centered on the island of Java, while the potential for new and renewable energy was outside Java.

For this reason, Indonesia needs to develop transmission for the next 10 years with a transmission requirement of more than 50,000 km of circuits including an extra high voltage transmission of about 500 kW along more than 10,000 km of circuits.

Meanwhile, the amount of investment that Indonesia needs to build transmission is assumed to be IDR 400 trillion.

"This is an investment potential that can be developed both from investment activities carried out by domestic companies including SOEs, then we can also collaborate with ASEAN countries and also with multinational companies so that transmission according to the set target can be achieved," said Yuliot.
