Lowering Methana Gas Emissions, Pertamina Approves Zero Routine Flaring Initiative

JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) is making strategic efforts to reduce emissions, one of which is through reducing methana exhaust gases from all company operational lines.

Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of PT Pertamina (Persero), Salyadi Dariah Saputra explained that reducing the methana exhaust gas is one of Pertamina's sustainability focuses, namely addressing climate change.

"Efforts to reduce the methana gas are carried out by Pertamina through a letter of support for the Zero Routine Flaring Initiative (ZRF)," Salyadi said in COP 29 quoted on Saturday, November 16.

He emphasized that Pertamina has committed to achieving zero routine flaring by 2030, with a target of reducing methane emissions by 40 percent from baseline 2021.

Pertamina has collaborated with major international organizations, including Japan Oil, Gas, and Metals Corporation (Jogmec) and members of the ASEAN Mining Council. Collaboration with USAID and technology providers such as Honeywell has also stepped up efforts to monitor and reduce methane emissions. In addition, Pertamina is working with Petronas and PTTEP in Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP2.0) as well as the Methane Leadership Program. Joint studies with JOGMEC in the Donggi Matindok field and JOB Tomori focus on quantification, reporting, as well as precision flaring reduction.

"To achieve meaningful and sustainable results, we must work with the government and the global community," said Salyadi.
